In the end the only option was a clean install of Android Studio.

I'm really sorry for my bad english and the confusion I may have made. I experienced the same issue when trying to update from 2.1.0 to 2.1.1 and the update problem still persisted after the Android Studio 2.1.2 release. After the message concerns more Java version (not JDK) and the application look is rendered, but it does not COMPILE the project.
